Taiwan-born New Zealand pianist Beth Chen has a performing career spanning from New Zealand to Europe. Reviewed for her "Mature, assured performance of elegance and power", Beth is a laureate of prizes and awards for her captivating interpretations at solo and concerto competitions, including 1st prizes at the National Concerto Competition New Zealand and North Queensland Concerto Competition Australia.
Beth's studies took her from Wellington to Germany where she performed extensively to critical acclaim, her expressive sense of musicianship established her as one of the most engaging pianists featured in concert series and international music festivals in the UK, Germany and Italy. Beth has appeared as a soloist with New Zealand School of Music Orchestra, Wellington Chamber Orchestra, Christchurch Symphony Orchestra and Neues Telemann Kammerorchester.
After many years living abroad, Beth returned to Wellington in 2017 where she enjoys exploring chamber music repertoire with fellow musicians. She has an on-going collaboration with members of Orchestra Wellington, New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and New Zealand String Quartet. Beth is a founding member of the piano team Duo Enharmonics with Nicole Chao. The Duo celebrated a successful tour with Chamber Music New Zealand in 2022. While life at the piano is an exciting one, Beth's time away from the keys is also never dull - she can be found growing food to varying degrees of success, trying to tame the family dog and helping her kid with violin while admitting she can’t actually play the violin. In 2023, Beth looks forward to more music adventures with her colleagues and sharing music with the wider New Zealand whānau.
