Concert Review
Beth Chen is a New Zealand-Taiwanese pianist known for performances combining expressive depth and technical clarity. A laureate of numerous competitions and scholarship awards, including first prize at the National Concerto Competition New Zealand, a two-time prize winner at the Australian Concerto & Vocal Competition, including a first prize, and a distinction at the Viotti International Piano Competition in Italy. Following studies in New Zealand and Germany, Beth relocated to London, where she presented solo recitals throughout Germany, the United Kingdom, and France. During this period, she appeared at numerous concerts and festivals, including the Edinburgh International Festival, which was a particular highlight of her time in Scotland, and received critical acclaim for her “mature, assured performances of elegance and power.”
As a concerto soloist, Beth has appeared with the Wellington City Orchestra, Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, and the Neues Telemann Kammerorchester as both a competition prize winner and invited guest soloist. In 2025, she was invited to perform as a double piano soloist with Duo Enharmonics and the Wairua Sinfonietta in Auckland, performing Mendelssohn's Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra.
Since returning to Wellington in 2017, Beth has devoted much of her time to chamber music, finding particular fulfilment in collaborations with colleagues from the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, New Zealand String Quartet and Orchestra Wellington. She undertook several national tours with Chamber Music New Zealand, alongside engagements in concert series throughout New Zealand. Several of these concerts have been recorded live for broadcast on Radio New Zealand Concert, and Beth has given interviews on RNZ, speaking about her musical life in New Zealand
Alongside her performing career, Beth is dedicated to the education of young pianists. She serves as an artist teacher at the New Zealand School of Music Te Kōkī at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington and is an active member of the Institute of Registered Music Teachers of New Zealand. She maintains a teaching studio in Owhiro Bay, where she supports the next generation of musicians through committed teaching and ongoing professional development
