Concert Review
Beth Chen is a New Zealand-Taiwanese pianist known for her performances that fuses expressive depth with technical brilliance. A laureate of numerous competitions and scholarships, she has received top prizes at national and international competitions in New Zealand, Australia and Italy. After completing her studies in New Zealand and Germany, she was invited to perform at music festivals in Europe where she received critical acclaim for her “mature, assured performances of elegance and power.” She has appeared as a soloist with the Wellington City Orchestra, Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, and Neues Telemann Kammerorchester, and has toured extensively, performing at festivals and concert series throughout New Zealand. In 2025, she appeared as a double piano soloist with Duo Enharmonics and Wairua Sinfonietta in Auckland. Since returning to Wellington in 2017, she has maintained active collaborations with musicians from the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Wellington, and the New Zealand String Quartet. Beth has been featured in several interviews on Radio New Zealand, and her performances have also been recorded for broadcast by Radio New Zealand.
Alongside her performing career, Beth is dedicated to the education of emerging pianists. She serves as an Artist Teacher at the New Zealand School of Music Te Kōkī at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington and is an active member of the Institute of Registered Music Teachers New Zealand with a studio in Owhiro Bay. Beth supports the next generation of musicians through dedicated teaching and professional development.
